Interesting how even one past trip makes things seem more familiar. Breezed through customs and began to recognize the buildings and landmarks as the driver barreled into the city about midnight. Traffic was still heavy. Even when the taxi turned into a small blind street (which made me wonder the first time) it felt good, now that I know it is a favorite shortcut and meant we were close to the hotel.
Yes two months does seem like a long time. I stopped at the supermarket Sunday afternoon and stocked up on the misc things I need to keep comfortable and began to step into the daily routines. They are different from those at home but habits and routines are important tools allowing me to focus my energies where I need them most.
When I started traveling internationally in the 70s I got a phone call home once per trip and it was frightfully expensive. In the 80s we installed a FAX machine at home so once or twice a week I could communicate. Today Helen and I email daily and I sometimes chat online with others at home which helps avoid the disconnected feeling of only two decades ago. And of course you have to endure my rambling missives as well. Technology does have "some" benefits.....
