After a football career at Syracuse University Joe started his career as defensive tackle for the Baltimore Colts professional football team. He was selected as "all-Pro" several times. During that time he attended both Dallas Theological Seminary and Westminster Theological Seminary.
In 1986 Joe founded "The Door" to minister to inner city children in the city of Baltimore. He lives in Baltimore with his wife and four children.
